Big shoutout to Philly DJ-Emcee, John Morrison. Brother-man put together this mix for Black History Month, which i’ve been rocking non-stop! It features classic tracks, more recent cuts, and soundbites from one of the pioneers of African history, Cheik Anta Diop. Give it a listen and share it with your peoples.
I obsessed with good music. In more recent moments in my life, i’ve come to believe that some of the best music being created is coming from South Africa. Therefore, i’ve been obsessed with South African music, particularly that of the house variety. Imagine my excitement when my man DrewCool sent me his latest mixtape, “Mzansi Unearthed!” It’s full of music that promotes feelings of euphoria and moment from the head all the way to the feet. Check it out below and enjoy.
I’m digging in the crates (as usual) for some classic gems. As always, i’m overwhelmed with great music, but somehow managed to narrow my selections down to a bite-sized sample of what i’m listening to this week. I hope you enjoy it. Happy Ol’ Skool Sunday!
I first learned about Tek-Zilla when i included a track he produced on “Radiant Souls Mixtape Vol. 2.” He’s released a number of great tracks and mixes. I find this one to be especially dope. A sound mirage of speeches and interviews from African political figures from the Continent and Diaspora and remixed Afrobeat, Funk, and High Life tracks, Tek-Zilla demonstrates his knack for producing top quality sound experiences for listeners!

I’ve recently had the pleasure of listening to one of DJ Lina Luv’s mixes. Her ear for great music from every corner of the Planet Earth is pretty impressive. Add to that her positive energy and her of music and dance as medicine against the ills of the world, she earned a new fan in yours truly. Check out this mix recorded at Philly’s World Cafe Live.
Peace! This week’s musical mixologist, DJ Ripley, delivers a nice mix of global bass, dubstep, and house for di people! Check it out and feel free to dance evenas you grind.
Peace… Blessings… Greetings to all! Akua Naru has been getting a LOT of play in my headphones today. I’m loving her interpretation of Fela Kuti’s classic song, “Lady.” And, then i saw a video from her recent live session video, which i had to share immediately with some of the people i love the most.
From there, i began obsessively listening to the album from her live session. There’s something about a good live performance that forever endears me to artists like Ms. Naru. Although i wasn’t there, this album does a good enough job capturing the energy for me. I love it! And i have that i’m going to be an Akua Naru fan for some time to come, because she embodies all of the bestest, most beautiful aspects of “Liberation Culture,” which (i believe) is desperately needed in our world today.
Greetings of Peace! Welcome to another Monday. As you begin your week, please do it responsibly… with some great tunes! I’ve got two great mixes which will help you do exactly that (enjoy your week responsibly, that is).
First up is Okayafrica’s, “Africa In Your Earbuds #19: Alec Lomami [Mixed by Brotha Onaci]. BIG HUUUUUGE shout out to Alec Lomami for inviting me to help out with this. He selected the music and the order of appearance. I merely pasted the songs together in a way that made sense to me. Be sure to also peep this, and almost ALL, of the AIYE cover art by DJ Underdog. I had an opportunity to check him out last Thursday at Lunchbox Theory‘s monthly Afrobeat party. I’m going to make sure that you “Get Familiar” with that brother in the very near future!
For my Philly people (and everyone else): i’ve teamed up with Tropicalismo and True Diversity Productions to bring a great new event to Northern Liberties called, EQuatorial Funk! To prepare you for the bass-quake that will be rocking Spring Garden, We’ve put together a sample mix for your listening pleasure. You can check it out on Mixcloud!
Peace & Power! Welcome to another edition of Mixtape Monday. This week’s feature comes Sherwin O, a member of the People’s DJs Collective. It contains mind blowing dub tracks that truly inspired a brotha! Check it out, then check out the People’s DJs on Facebook and Twitter to keep up with the great events that he and the other People’s play.
This week’s Ol’ Skool Sunday commemorates the musical contributions of a couple artists who recently departed the physical world. Donna Summer and Chuck Brown left a huge impact on people and continue be staples on party playlists! Here are some of the tracks that i’m diggin’. I hope you enjoy them as well.
